Lucy Byrne Masterclass with Philippe Cassard

A master class offers a student the opportunity to gain fresh ideas on interpretation, technique and performance. It is considered one of the most effective means of performance development. At the New Ross Piano Festival in September, Lucy Byrne, a DIPC Finlay Programme participant, took part in a master class with Philippe Cassard, the first winner of the Dublin International Piano Competition, in 1988.

Philippe has established an international reputation as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. The invention of the master class is attributed to Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and for the master class with Philippe, Lucy performed “La Campanella” by Liszt.

Philippe explored the piece with Lucy, guiding her through the performance to bring greater technical expertise, expression and understanding of the composition.

Following the masterclass Lucy said, “this was a great experience for me. Philippe showed me how to show the colours and line within my piece and truly allowed me to open up my mindset to what could be done with it.”
